TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Not combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.

In case of fire in the surroundings: all extinguishing agents allowed.
EXPLOSION

In case of fire: keep cylinder cool by spraying with water.
EXPOSURE

 •INHALATION Confusion. Drowsiness. Unconsciousness.
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Artificial respiration if indicated. Refer for medical attention.
•SKIN ON CONTACT WITH LIQUID: FROSTBITE.
Cold-insulating gloves. Protective clothing.
ON FROSTBITE: rinse with plenty of water, do NOT remove clothes. Refer for medical attention.
 •EYES
Safety goggles, or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
 •INGESTION
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Ventilation. NEVER direct water jet on liquid. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. (Extra personal protection: self-contained breathing apparatus).
Fireproof if in building.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
COLOURLESS GAS OR COMPRESSED LIQUEFIED GAS , WITH CHARACTERISTIC ODOUR.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:
The gas is heavier than air, and may accumulate in low ceiling spaces causing deficiency of oxygen.

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on heating producing corrosive and highly toxic fumes (hydrogen chloride - see ICSC 0163, hydrogen fluoride - see ICSC 0283, and phosgene - see ICSC 0007). Reacts with powdered aluminium, zinc and magnesium. Reacts with acids or acid fumes producing highly toxic fumes (chlorides, fluorides). Attacks some forms of plastics, rubber and coatings.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV: 10 ppm; (as TWA) (ACGIH 1999).
MAK: 10 ppm; 45 mg/m3; (1995)
OSHA PEL: TWA 1000 ppm (4200 mg/m3)
NIOSH REL: TWA 10 ppm (40 mg/m3)
NIOSH IDLH: 5000 ppm

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation.

INHALATION RISK:
A harmful concentration of this gas in the air will be reached very quickly on loss of containment.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The liquid may cause frostbite. The substance may cause effects on the central nervous system at high concentrations. Exposure far above OEL could cause cardiac dysrhythmia.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
The substance may have effects on the liver.
PHYSICAL
PROPERTIES
Boiling point: 8.9°C
Melting point: -135°C
Solubility in water: poor (1 g/100 ml at 20°C)
Vapour pressure, kPa at 21°C: 159
Relative vapour density (air = 1): 3.8
Auto-ignition temperature: 522°C
Octanol/water partition coefficient as log Pow: 1.55
ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA
This substance may be hazardous to the environment; special attention should be given to its impact on the ozone layer.
N O T E S
High concentrations in the air cause a deficiency of oxygen with the risk of unconsciousness or death. Check oxygen content before entering area. No odour warning if toxic concentrations are present. Do NOT use in the vicinity of a fire or a hot surface, or during welding. Turn leaking cylinder with the leak up to prevent escape of gas in liquid state. Freon21, Genetron 21, Arcton 7 and Algofrene type 5 are trade names.
