TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire. Liquid formulations containing organic solvents may be flammable.
NO open flames.
Water spray, foam, carbon dioxide, alcohol-resistant foam, dry powder.
EXPLOSION

EXPOSURE
PREVENT GENERATION OF MISTS! AVOID ALL CONTACT!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
•INHALATION Convulsions. Dizziness. Laboured breathing. Nausea. Vomiting. Pupillary constriction, muscle cramp, excessive salivation. Sweating. Unconsciousness.
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer for medical attention.
•SKIN MAY BE ABSORBED! (Further see Inhalation).
Protective clothing. Protective gloves.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap. Refer for medical attention.
•EYES LIQUID OR AEROSOL WILL BE ABSORBED! Redness. Pain.
Face shield. or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
•INGESTION Abdominal cramps. Diarrhoea. Vomiting. (See Inhalation).
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.
Give a slurry of activated charcoal in water to drink. See Notes. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Collect leaking and spilled liquid in sealable containers as far as possible. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. Chemical protection suit including self-contained breathing apparatus.
Separated from strong oxidants, food and feedstuffs . Keep in a well-ventilated room.
Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
COLOURLESS LIQUID

PHYSICAL DANGERS:

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on burning producing toxic fumes including phosphorous oxides and sulfur oxides . Reacts violently with strong oxidants. Attacks plastic.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV: 0.05 mg/m³ as TWA; (skin); BEI issued; (ACGIH 2002).
MAK: IIb (see Notes); H; (DFG 2002).
NIOSH REL: TWA 0.1 mg/m3 skin
NIOSH IDLH: 10 mg/m3

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol, through the skin and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air will be reached rather slowly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C; on spraying or dispersing, however, much faster.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance may cause effects on the nervous system , resulting in cardiac disorders , convulsions , cyanosis and respiratory failure . Cholinesterase inhibition. Exposure may result in death. Medical observation is indicated. The effects may be delayed.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Cholinesterase inhibitor; cumulative effect is possible: see acute hazards/symptoms.
PHYSICAL
PROPERTIES
Boiling point at 0.27kPa: 134°C
Relative density (water = 1): 1.1
Solubility in water: poor
Vapour pressure, Pa at 20°C: <10
Auto-ignition temperature: 464°C
ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA
The substance is very toxic to aquatic organisms. This substance may be hazardous in the environment; special attention should be given to birds, honey bees and mammals. This substance does enter the environment under normal use. Great care, however, should be given to avoid any additional release, e.g. through inappropriate disposal.
N O T E S
This substance is a mixture of two isomers: Demeton-O and Demeton-S (see ICSC 0864). Do NOT take working clothes home. Specific treatment is necessary in case of poisoning with this substance; the appropriate means with instructions must be available. Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is suggested. Carrier solvents used in commercial formulations may change physical and toxicological properties. MAK value not established but full documentation is available (MAK IIb).
