TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO open flames.
Powder, alcohol-resistant foam, water spray, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION Above 65°C explosive vapour/air mixtures may be formed.
Above 65°C use a closed system, ventilation.

EXPOSURE
PREVENT DISPERSION OF DUST! AVOID ALL CONTACT!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
•INHALATION Burning sensation. Cough. Sore throat. Shortness of breath. Laboured breathing. Wheezing.
Avoid inhalation of dust . Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer for medical attention.
 •SKIN Skin burns. Pain. Blisters.
Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower. Refer for medical attention.
•EYES Redness. Pain. Severe deep burns.
Face shield, or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
•INGESTION Burning sensation. Abdominal pain. Nausea. Vomiting. Headache. Weakness. Convulsions. Shock or collapse.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Ventilation. Sweep spilled substance into covered containers; if appropriate, moisten first to prevent dusting. Carefully collect remainder, then remove to safe place. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. (Extra personal protection: chemical protection suit including self-contained breathing apparatus.)
Separated from strong acids, strong oxidants, acid anhydrides , food and feedstuffs , metals . Dry. Well closed.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
HYGROSCOPIC COLOURLESS CRYSTALS OR WHITE FLAKES , WITH PUNGENT ODOUR.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on burning producing toxic and corrosive gases , including nitrogen oxides . The solution in water is a medium strong base. Reacts with acid anhydrides , strong acids and strong oxidants , causing fire hazard. Attacks many metals forming flammable/explosive gas (hydrogen - see ICSC 0001).

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
MAK: Sah; (DFG 2002).
See Notes.

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation and by ingestion .

INHALATION RISK:
No indication can be given about the rate in which a harmful concentration in the air is reached on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance is corrosive to the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. Corrosive on ingestion. Inhalation of the substance may cause lung oedema (see Notes). The substance may cause effects on the nervous system , resulting in impaired functions and unconsciousness when ingested in large amounts.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Repeated or prolonged contact may cause skin sensitization. Repeated or prolonged inhalation exposure may cause asthma.

ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA
This substance may be hazardous in the environment; special attention should be given to fish.
N O T E S
The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation is therefore essential. Anyone who has shown symptoms of asthma due to this substance should avoid all further contact. The symptoms of asthma often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential. Do NOT take working clothes home. MAK value not established, but full documentation is available (MAK IIb).
