Reacts with water to produce heat and corrosive fumes. The solution in water is a strong acid, it reacts violently with bases and is corrosive. OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS: TLV (as Se): 0.2 mg/m3 (ACGIH 2000). MAK: (measured as respirable fraction) 0.05 mg/m3; II, 1 (1999) ROUTES OF EXPOSURE: The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its vapour, and by ingestion of the liquid. INHALATION RISK: A harmful contamination of the air can be reached rather quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C. EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE: The substance is corrosive to the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. Inhalation of the vapour may cause lung oedema (see Notes). Medical observation is indicated. EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE: Repeated or prolonged contact may cause skin sensitization. The substance may have effects on the respiratory tract , gastrointestinal tract , central nervous system and liver , resulting in nasal irritation, persistent garlic odour, stomach pain, nervousness and liver impairment .
